Mortal Stronghold

Artist: Keith Parkinson

For the first time, I'd almost be willing to be a thief, and steal a painting. Why is this? I've just spent nearly two hours browsing the art galleries of artist Keith Parkinson. Everything from dragons to raving beauties grace page after page of his art world. Panoramic landscapes jump out at you with a breathtaking grandeur unlike any real landscape that I've ever walked on. I've chosen "Mortal Stronghold" to review. I have it blown up on my screen in order to review it. Unfortunately, you will have to visit the link to see its full beauty. Mr. Parkinson has his work copyrighted and I don't blame him!

Keith is a graduate from the Kendall School of Design, first starting his professional career by creating for the art of Pinball Machines and the new and ever growing art of the Arcade world. This showcased his work, and is now seen on many popular and classic games. Moving to TSR, his work covered a wider area. Designing every thing from calendars to book covers, with the list of his clients reading like a ‘Who's Who’ of authors and book publishers.

I must describe the painting from left to right, as it is a panorama. Picture a fantasy community of three huge castles, connected by bridges that precariously hang over a rocky yet beautiful landscape. The first castle is creamy white with many turrets and red flags hanging from its fourteen towers. A breeze blows the flags westward out over the sea that surrounds the castle, and flows gently under the bridge. It's perched on a set of cliffs jutting out of the water that are beautifully landscaped naturally and covered in green grasses. I can see little entrances into the cliffs that remind me of old caves. At sea level there is a sand bar which is also covered in grass and rocks that leads to the cliff and on up to the base of the castle.

The center castle is the same in color and likewise perched on a cliff, yet this cliff has seen touches of man. There is an entrance carved into the steep side that one must reach by a stone staircase that leads into a grand entrance on the side of the shear face. Perhaps a place for a ship to dock and unload its treasures. A rocky, sandy beach connects both castle areas along with the bridge. I can only make out five towers on this castle even though its size is enormous. To the right of this castle another bridge is perched over a sand road, connecting it to the third castle.

I don't believe this castle can be reached from the ground, but must be accessed from the bridge. It's colors match the first two castles to the left, and it is just as grand. The cliffs that it is on are not easily
accessible by water either. If I were the king, this would be the safest of the three during a battle. All of this is backed by a brilliant blue sky and surrounded by a peaceful sea.

Keith is now winning awards for his work. It is our reward to be able to view his art which is also published in a book of its own. Most notable, is his painting for Everquest, a very popular online game. This was featured on the cover of TV guide. He lives now in Arizona with his wife Mary and their two sons, Nick and Zach. Be sure to visit the site, you will be amazed.
