Moto & Kozo Visit the Museum of Modern Art

Artist: Phil Dynan

Phil Dynan is one of the true artists of this decade. His works, which have been seen in over 107 countries are vivid, multicoloured creations, with a hint of old Mexico. When you see his paintings you immediately think of the original film studio's use of Technicolor. For you younger readers, Technicolor gave film directors the chance to put flashy costumes on the stars in every bold color of the rainbow, allowing the audience to be entranced for hours by such vivid color.

Phil is a brilliant author, and illustrates his books himself, adding even more of his personality to his literary and artistic works. Most of his works are commissioned and he shares that he has very little artwork on the market for actual sale. He has even lived off of rice and water, in order to achieve his masterpieces! The archetypal starving artist! When working in the mediums of watercolor or acrylics, he has a favorite art paper from India, called "Khaddi" which he purchases from Faulkner's in London.

As Phil's art spans such a wide spectrum, I've decided to review one of his delightful book covers. He has done a series of Moto & Kozo books, and all the covers are delightful. Moto & Kozo are two rambunctious cats, that always get into adventures in an arty setting. When " Moto & Kozo Visit the Museum of Modern Art," they wander around only to discover that the paintings are very much Alive! On the cover, Moto peeks out of an earthenware urn, painted with muted brown and beige shapes, done in a Mexican flavor. Moto's vivid green eyes, looking for more mischief, makes the reviewer think that he may be about to spend one of his nine lives. The sunset of colors in the background are softly blended into a horizontal symphony of yellows and oranges. These bright colors set the earth tones of the urn and cat off very nicely. The painting is bordered by a series of purple and pink triangles on a black background. The work is cute, appropriately simple in design, and very colorful.

Children adore bright colors. If a small child were browsing in a book store, I know that this cover would present itself well.

Among Phil's numerous accomplishments, he also designs greeting cards, does event promotions, and posters. He even enjoys marathons. Phil Dynan lives in the United Kingdom, and credits his children for many of his wonderful ideas.
